Cadair Idris is one of Wales’ most iconic and beloved mountains and a favourite among hikers and climbers. It offers a combination of majestic landscape and challenging hikes, along with a deep reservoir of mythology and history.
History and mythology
Over the millennia, The area around Cadair Idris has been shaped by volcanic activity and glaciation, creating its dramatic topography of steep cliffs, crags, and cwms (cirques). The name Cadair Idris translates to “Idris’s Chair,” referring to Idris Gawr (Idris the Giant), a legendary figure from Welsh mythology who was said to be both a giant and an astronomer. According to folklore, Idris used the mountain as a chair to gaze at the stars. The area is also home to a number of ancient settlements and abandoned mine workings.
Location
Cadair Idris is located in the southern part of Eryri National Park. The mountain is easily accessible by car, with several parking areas near popular trailheads such as Minffordd and Ty Nant. For those relying on public transportation, the nearest large town with bus and train connections is Dolgellau, from where local buses or taxis can get you closer to the mountain.
