Cadair Berwyn – The Welsh Roswell

Cadair Berwyn is the highest peak in the Berwyn mountain range and a fantastic place for those looking for a more physically challenging hike in a wilder part of North Wales. The raw, rugged natural beauty of the area is reason enough for a visit, but this area also has a unique and mysterious atmosphere, fed by its intriguing historical sites, including abandoned mines, a standing stone, Bronze Age structures, and multiple airplane crash sites. It is also known for the mysterious stories that have led to this place gaining the title of “The Welsh Roswell.”

On a cold winter’s night in 1974, a series of unexplained phenomena—including an earth-shaking tremor, inexplicable lights, and a loud explosion—sparked widespread speculation and conspiracy theories. Despite official explanations of an earthquake paired with meteorological quirks, the event remains a focal point of UFO lore in the UK.

Hiking Route

For those looking to climb Cadair Berwyn and explore this mysterious area for themselves, beginning the journey at Pistyll Rhaeadr is an excellent choice. The waterfall, one of Wales’ highest and most beautiful, serves as a stunning start to your hike and a great natural landmark for navigating the area.

Location

Pistyll Rhaeadr is accessible by car, located roughly 4 miles from the village of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant. From major cities such as Liverpool or Manchester, you would head towards Oswestry first, using the A5 road, before taking the B4580 directly to the waterfall. Signage along the way makes it relatively easy to find.
