Cnicht – The Welsh Matterhorn

Cnicht, a mountain in the Moelwynion range of North Wales, is often referred to as the “Welsh Matterhorn” due to its distinctive sharp peak. While its appearance may resemble the famous Alpine mountain from a distance, climbing to its summit is a much less strenuous affair and offers a moderate afternoon hiking opportunity with fantastic views of North Wales. It also provides the chance to explore some impressive 19th-century ruins from the slate mining industry that once dominated the area.

An Industrial Past

Once a bustling hub of industrial activity, the area around Cnicht was part of the thriving slate mining industry that fueled communities and economies. But as demand dwindled and the world shifted, the slate workings were abandoned.
